Grace Lives in the Inevitable

What advice would you give to the younger you? ⠀

Love Hard.  Especially because I now know what that would cost me… to love hard. And I would do it all again. I wouldn’t have spared myself any of the pain that I have gone through by loving hard, and by loving what death can touch. I wouldn’t change that. And I think sometimes we try and protect ourselves from the inevitable, and really that’s we’re grace is. Grace lives in the inevitable.”⠀

“So I would say, ‘Hold back nothing. Love completely, because it is a privilege to love that much…. to be that broken over something you loved like crazy.”⠀

“So, love hard.” ⠀

What joy to share an afternoon with Chris and Jenni Graebe, two of my favorite people, on one of my favorite podcasts: Live It Well.

I’d love for you to listen in.

As a bonus, they include snippets of our conversation – and many others – into their
Best of 2019 Episode, Advice to the Younger You.

  1. Amen. After meeting you at Glen Eyrie in November and speaking to you about the death of my husband, reading your book, and being encouraged by you to begin writing my own, I couldn’t agree more. We should not deprive ourselves of the love and the ability to love given to us through the grace of Jesus.
This past month has been a struggle and I really don’t know why. Sadness appears from the shadows and attacks in the sunlight. Prayer has been my constant companion and yet fear rears its ugly head. I enjoy your writing and hope to someday be able to touch others with my words and experiences. Life seems perilous today. I am glad to be at school among my goofy middle-schoolers who can bring a smile when I least expect but always need it. God Bless, Paula Rutan

  2. Love all your words as always —- lots to reflect on. LOVING HARD— that is our job. My past includes lots of LOVING TOUGH—- my husband was delivered from four major and life debilitating addictions — there was lots of tough love happening by me but well worth it. He is a transformed man and after almost 47 years of marriage, I love him more deeply now than I ever have! He is now helping others get out of addictions. God’s grace is amazing! And my sons — so much love there as well! Hard to even put into words. I, more than once ,
told them that I would lay on a railroad track and let a train run me over in their place if I had a choice — that is UNCONDITIONAL MOTHER LOVE! Happy 2020 to amazing Tricia!

  3. Amen! and ditto… Grief is love with nowhere to go and I’m glad I grieve so hard because that love was so good!
